How to create a household

A household is defined as a group of individuals who live under the same roof. Generally, a household is a nuclear family, but some households also include other relatives such as an aging grand-mother or a cousin in town for college.

Also, in reconstituted families, some children may live with their mother or their father, and this parent may also be living with a new partner who also has children from a previous marriage. With these families, the household should be defined in the genogram to clarify the situation.

In a genogram, a household is defined by a dotted line around all the members who belong to one household. In GenoPro, you can define a household by clicking on the dotted line button . This will make a dotted line appear on the GenoMap. Place the line below the household you want to create.

Create Household

Use the blue squares that appear on the line to manipulate it around all the members of the household. Once a household is complete, you can close up the line by bringing the two blue end squares together. This will complete the household and a light green colour will appear in the background.

Living with Grand-Parents

This genogram shows Florence is living with her grand-parents Nick and Melissa. Her father is unknown, and the line between Sarah and Florence’s father shows that Sarah became pregnant following a temporary relation or a one-night stand. This genogram illustrates that Sarah has given up her child for her parents to take care of. However, there is no indication to show that they have adopted her, so it may be a temporary situation.

John went on to marry Louise, a divorcee who has custody of Catherine, her daughter from her previous marriage. John and Louise had a daughter together after they were married. This genogram shows that John and Louise are living with Frederic, Esther and Catherine. Andrew has moved out and lives on his own.
